This design technology teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to select and combine different materials to design and make scarecrows for a garden to match identified success criteria. The class can identify effective ways of supporting structures and using shiny materials when building their products.

Lesson One : What Materials
Investigate and describe some of the different materials that could be used to build each of the parts for a garden scarecrow model to scare away visiting birds

Lesson Two : Dull and Shiny
Identify, compare and test the properties and functions of a range of materials that could be used to build each part of a garden scarecrow model

Lesson Three : Scarecrow Materials
Select and record a range of different materials that can match success criteria when building a model of a garden scarecrow

Lesson Four : Supporting Structures
Explore and model some of the different ways of adding strength and support to a model of a garden scarecrow so that it can withstand weather elements

Lesson Five : School Scarecrow
Select and record some of the different materials that can be used to produce a model of a garden scarecrow that meets the chosen success criteria

Lesson Six : Testing Scarecrows
Test and evaluate completed garden scarecrows against the selected success criteria to review the model’s functions when scaring birds away from a garden
