Lesson Four – Supporting Structures

This design technology teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to explore and model some of the different ways of adding strength and support to a model of a garden scarecrow so that it can withstand weather elements.

The class can practise using a range of different materials to make a model scarecrow that can stand up in a garden and scare away any visiting birds.

Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to explore and model some of the different ways of adding strength and support to a model of a garden scarecrow so that it can withstand weather elements

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to describe some of the different structures that can be used to support buildings and a template to select and record a way of supporting a scarecrow so that it stands up in a garden by combining a range of different materials.

The interactive presentation can be used to explore different ways of adding strength and support to a model of a garden scarecrow.

This lesson is part of a design technology scheme of work to get the children to select and combine different materials to design and make scarecrows for a garden to match identified success criteria. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
