Lesson Five – Sundial

This science teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to investigate how to design and make a model of a sundial to track and record changes to the position of the Sun in the sky during the course of the day.

The class can identify and record how a shadow that has been made by the Sun can change its size, position and shape as the Sun tracks across the sky from East to West.

Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to investigate how to design and make a model of a sundial to track and record changes to the position of the Sun in the sky during the course of the day

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe the construction of sundials made from different materials and a shared reading text to explain how to make a model of a sundial to track the position of the Sun in the sky.

The interactive presentation can be used to explore how to make a model of a sundial to track and record changes to the position of the Sun in the sky.

This lesson is part of a science scheme of work to get the children to investigate and record how a range of light sources including the sun can make and change shadows using different opaque materials. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
