Lesson One – Opaque and Transparent

This science teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to identify, sort and record the individual properties of a range of different materials in relation to how they respond and react to light.
The class can explain and illustrate how a selection of opaque materials can block light that is emanating from different sources and create matching shadow shapes.
Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to identify, sort and record the individual properties of a range of different materials in relation to how they respond and react to light
Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and classify materials as either opaque or transparent, a set of cards to sort a selection of materials between opaque and transparent and a template to identify, sort and record a range of different materials to show how they react and respond to light.
The interactive presentation can be used to explore the properties of different materials in relation to how they respond and react to light.
This lesson is part of a science scheme of work to get the children to investigate and record how a range of light sources including the sun can make and change shadows using different opaque materials. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
