Lesson Two – Grid Addition

This maths teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to revise and model how to use the grid method to add different pairs of two digit numbers utilising partitioning between their sets of tens and ones.
The class can identify and record corrections to example calculations when adding pairs of numbers using their matching tens and ones to illustrate the addition grid method.

Activities in this teaching pack include a differentiated set of worksheets to check and correct addition calculations of different pairs of two digit numbers using the grid method working with numbers to fifty for support ability levels and numbers to one hundred for core and extension ability levels.
The interactive presentation gets the children to explore how to use the grid method to add pairs of two digit numbers utilising partitioning.
This lesson is part of a maths scheme of work to get the children to investigate different ways of adding three and four digit numbers using mental and formal written calculations with exchange between place value. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
