Easter Gospels

The children can use their art and design and literacy skills to understand the sequence of events surrounding the Easter story. The class can develop collage scenes to illustrate one of the main events that happened to Jesus when he was crucified on a cross and rose from the dead three days later.

Gospel Flowchart
Spend some time reading with the class the verses from one of the four Gospels in the New Testament that describe what happened to Jesus. Work with the children to produce a flowchart showing the development of the narrative story from when Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey to when he ascended into heaven to be with his father God. Get the class to identify some of the main characters involved in the Easter story. Ask the children to identify their significance in the narrative of what happened to Jesus at this point in his life. Get them to suggest what each character might have said to match one of the verses from the Gospel.

Gospel Scenes
Split the class into small groups and provide them with one of the events that occurred during the Easter story as recorded in one of the four Gospels such as the Last Supper or Jesus praying in the garden of Gethsemane. Get the children to devise a picture scene illustrating what happened in their section of the story from the Gospels. The class can select and combine different materials to produce a relief collage scene for their artwork. The children can draw some outline shapes as the background of their scene. They can glue materials on the shapes to build up a relief image so that it projects out from the paper.

Gospel Play Script
Working in English, the class can produce some play scripts to match the section of the Easter story that they have portrayed in their collage scenes. Remind the children about how format and structure a play script to indicate stage directions and character expressions. The class should explore how to use their play scripts to bring their collage scenes alive for the viewer when telling the story of what happened to Jesus. Allow the class to spend time rehearsing their play script ready for a performance.

Gospel Stations
Display the collage scenes produced by the class in sequence around the school’s corridors. You can get some children in each group to handwrite important verses from one of the Gospels to accompany each collage scene. Invite children from other classes in the school to visit the different Gospel scenes in sequence around the school. At each scene, get the children to perform their play scripts to bring alive the section of the story from one of the Gospels for the visiting groups from other classes.
