Lesson Four – Number Changes

This maths teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to explore and record changes to the place value of digits in a three digit number when subtracting ones crossing tens for exchange.
The class can explain and model how to use exchange between place value when completing each step in the calculations to subtract pairs of three digit numbers and ones.
Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to explore and record changes to the place value of digits in a three digit number when subtracting ones crossing tens for exchange
Activities in this teaching pack include a template to record how to work with concrete equipment and diagrams to model subtraction calculations and a differentiated set of worksheets to practise subtracting ones from different three digit numbers for core and ability levels and two digit numbers for support ability levels when crossing tens to use exchange for each calculation.
The interactive presentation gets the children to explore changes to the place value of digits in a three digit number when subtracting ones crossing tens.
This lesson is part of a maths scheme of work to get the children to develop and refine mental and informal written calculation skills when subtracting different pairs of three digit numbers and ones, tens and hundreds. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
