Lesson Two – Evacuee Letter

This history teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to practise composing and presenting a letter in character to describe what it was like to be evacuated during the Second World War to a safe location in Britain.
The class can identify and list reasons as to why children were evacuated away from main population areas to provide protection from the Blitz and German bombing.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to explain how and why children were evacuated during the Second World War, a shared reading text to identify and describe the experiences of evacuees during this period in British history and a template to write in character as an evacuee to describe experiences related to what happened during evacuation.
The interactive presentation can be used to explore how to compose a letter in character to describe being evacuated during the Second World War.
This lesson is part of a history scheme of work to get the children to research and illustrate how family life in Britain changed during the Second World War including evacuation and changing roles and responsibilities. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
