Lesson Three – Clay Impressions

This art and design teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to investigate and practise using some of the tools and equipment that can be used to create different shapes and patterns when working in clay.

The class can practise adding some special shapes and patterns to an example clay tile to represent a story that can illustrates Viking culture and traditions.

Activities in this teaching pack include a shared reading text to select ideas for artwork in clay using the narrative of a Norse myth about the Wedding of Thor and a worksheet to practise making a range of impressions in clay using different tools to produce a tile reflecting a Viking myth.

The interactive presentation can be used to explore and practise using some of the tools that can be used to create different shapes and patterns in clay.

This lesson is part of an art and design scheme of work to get the children to develop and refine a range of different art and design techniques when working with clay to make pots that represent Viking culture and traditions. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
