Lesson Five – Viking Designs

This art and design teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to explore how to select and paint a range of different patterns on modelled clay pots to represent Viking culture and traditions from the past.
The class can choose and work with special shapes and colours for their completed pot designs to match an aspect of Viking life such as a narrative story told as a myth.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe the shapes and patterns that can be seen on historical artefacts and a worksheet to follow a set of instructions to select and add patterns to a clay pot to represent Viking customs and traditions.
The interactive presentation can be used to explore how to paint a range of different patterns on clay pots to represent Viking culture and traditions from the past.
This lesson is part of an art and design scheme of work to get the children to develop and refine a range of different art and design techniques when working with clay to make pots that represent Viking culture and traditions. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
