Lesson Four – Light and Dark

This art and design teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to explain and practise some different ways of mixing colour shades to show areas of light and dark in a painting of some special types of flowers.

The class can identify the correct vocabulary words that can be used to describe the different colour shades that have been mixed to represent some flower petals.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe the shades of colours that can be seen in different flowers and the shades of blue that can be seen in a range of objects and materials and a worksheet to investigate and record the matching shades for one colour shade from light to dark.

The interactive presentation can be used to explore and practise ways of mixing different colour shades to show areas of light and dark in a painting of flowers.

This lesson is part of an art and design scheme of work to get the children to explore and model how to select, mix and use shades of different colours using a range of artwork techniques in a still life painting of a vase of flowers. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
