Lesson Five – Building Walls
This science teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to identify, describe and compare the properties of some of the different materials that can be used to build the walls around and inside a house.
The class can make and test model walls to see how well they can withstand wind and rain when they have been built using a range of different materials.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe some of the common materials that can be used to build household objects and a worksheet to test a selection of walls made from different materials for their strength, permeability and durability.
The interactive presentation gets the children to explore how to describe and compare different some of the materials that can be used to build walls in a house.
This lesson is part of a science scheme of work to get the children to identify, group and compare a variety of everyday materials used for a range of different functions on the basis of their physical properties. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
