Lesson Four – Shape Patterns

This maths teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to practise identifying and describing some of the special patterns that can be created when using different sequences of some 2D shapes.
The class can explain how they have added shapes to each pattern to match the properties of the other shapes in each sequence including sides, vertices and lines of symmetry.
Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to practise identifying and describing some of the special patterns that can be created when using different sequences of some 2D shapes
Activities in this teaching pack include differentiated sets or cards for support, core and extension ability levels to select and create some different patterns by using matching sequences of 2D shapes with matching properties such as the number of sides and vertices or with lines of symmetry.
The interactive presentation gets the children to explore and describe some of the patterns that can be made using different sequences of 2D shapes.
This lesson is part of a maths scheme of work to get the children to identify, describe and compare different 2D shapes by their matching individual properties including the number of sides, vertices and lines of symmetry. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
-
Labelling Bicycles
Develop and refine word processing skills when labelling and organising different parts and equipment that can be used when riding a bicycle
-
Garden Sculpture
Select and use different materials to mould and shape sculptures representing a range of artefacts that might be used in a family garden location
-
Witch’s Cauldron
Select and write sets of instructions that a witch can follow when making a range of potions for casting different spells
-
Stories From the Bible
Investigate the sequence of events in stories from the Bible told by Jesus and reflect on lessons that the narratives can teach people about their lives
