Lesson One – What Flags

This art and design teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to explore, describe and record the range of colours, shapes and patterns that have been used when creating flag designs for different purposes.

The class can select, colour and arrange a selection of special shapes to produce the design for a flag that can represent ideas and themes about their own families.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify some of the shapes and colours that have been used to make different flags, a set of cards to select shapes and colours to use when designing a flag and a template to record the design for a flag representing a family.

The interactive presentation can be used to explore and record the range of colours, shapes and patterns that have been used in different flag designs.

This lesson is part of an art and design scheme of work to get the children to explore and test different methods of printing shapes and patterns that can be used to make the design for a flag to fly on top of a castle. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
