Unit C – Subtraction

This numeracy scheme of work for the Foundation Stage gets the children to calculate and record the difference between numbers to ten by counting back to show items sold in a shop at the seaside. The class can complete role-play shopping trips to model how the sums of numbers change when subtracted.

Calculate and record the difference between pairs of numbers to ten by counting back to show numbers of items sold in a shop at the seaside

Lesson One : Counting Stock
Practise using counting back to calculate the difference between pairs of numbers to show some of the special things that can be sold in a seaside shop

Lesson Two : Seaside Rock
Investigate how to use counting on and back to subtract pairs of single digit numbers from ten to show pieces of rock that might be sold to customers in a seaside shop

Lesson Three : Buckets and Spades
Explore how to use counting on and back to identify pairs of numbers that sum to ten when recording some of the buckets and spades that might be sold in a shop

Lesson Four : Fishing
Practise identifying and recording the matching sums that result when subtracting single digit numbers from ten to represent numbers of fish that might be bought from a shop

Lesson Five : Seaside Shop
Practise role-playing shopping trips at the seaside to model and illustrate how to subtract different single digit numbers from ten
-
School Safari
Identify and compare some of the different animals that live in the school grounds and make comparisons between animals that live in other habitats
-
Four Sided Shapes
Name, model and classify some example four sided shapes with matching numbers of corners and sides that can be seen and used in different locations
-
Chameleons
Identify and record some of the different ways that authors can use descriptive vocabulary in stories and select and use initial sounds in words
-
Butterflies
Investigate, describe and compare some of the different butterflies that can be found living in a garden area in the school grounds
